Did you know?

• A pollutant is something that is introduced to an environment that has negative effects.
• Pollutants can come from a wide range of sources from raw sewage to runoff from fields, roads, and old mines.
• Microplastics are another example of a pollutant as they should not be in the river.
• Pollutants will affect the water quality as they contaminate the river either by adding a new substance or causing pollution levels to become too high.
• For example, a little bit of phosphate and nitrate is good in the river as they can help plants grow, however, when you have too much, algae blooms can form which then starves fish of oxygen.
• Pollution can also make it dangerous for us to enjoy our local rivers through activities such as swimming.
