Chalk Stream Challenge

Alex McKay

Chalk streams are one of our most precious habitats. Found almost nowhere else on Earth, they are critically important to many vulnerable species. We need champions to safeguard the health of our chalk streams and speak up for their survival.

The Chalk Stream Challenge was created as part of the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme and aims to get youth groups, such as Scouts and Guides, exploring and learning about these unique environments.

The challenge combines pre-tested routes along local streams with opportunities for learning and exploration. Activities can easily be customised to suit different age ranges and there are several set routes to choose from. The current routes are based in Alresford, Whitchurch, and Andover, but the activities can easily be adapted to other chalk streams. Group leaders can run the challenge at no cost or reward their members with a special fabric badges for a small fee.
