Did you know?
• River temperature is a very important factor in controlling species distribution, this is because different species are adapted for living in different climates.
• Did you know that Atlantic salmon struggle when the temperature is above 20c and will experience thermal stress and behaviour changes when its above 23c.
• With temperature rises becoming more common with climate change, species distributions will change. For example, there will be increasingly less grayling in the south of England as this is currently their warm temperature limit.
• While influencing the day to day temperatures is out of our control it is really import for us to help slow climate change, different riparian management strategies can also help keep the river cooler, for example, planting more trees along the river bank to provide some shade.
