Together with our communities, protecting the source of the Hampshire Avon
Our Healthy Headwaters is a new five-year community engagement initiative led by Wessex Rivers Trust, made possible by Wessex Water’s Partner’s Program and funding from Wiltshire County Council.
The project focuses on the upper reaches of the Hampshire Avon, working with local people, schools, and businesses to raise awareness of river health and support practical action to protect and restore these delicate chalk stream ecosystems.
Why Headwaters Matter
There are only around 200 chalk streams in the world—and 85% are here in England. Fed by underground aquifers, these rivers run clear and cold all year round, making them one of the most biodiverse freshwater habitats in the world.
But many are under threat. Household water use, chemicals, and pollution from septic systems can damage these fragile streams, affecting the health of the whole river system.
Our Healthy Headwaters is here to help communities understand the part we all play—and how small changes at home, school or work can lead to big improvements for wildlife and water quality.
The project will deliver engaging campaigns, school workshops, and community events centred around four key themes:
How to use and maintain septic tanks in ways that reduce pollution to rivers and groundwater.
The water we use at home comes directly from our rivers. Learn simple steps to reduce water waste and help keep rivers flowing.
Some topical flea treatments can be toxic to aquatic life. We’ll share guidance and alternatives that keep pets and rivers healthy.
From cleaning products to garden sprays, what we wash down the drain can harm rivers. This theme focuses on practical swaps for safer choices.
What's Happening?
Over the life of the project, communities will be invited to take part in a wide range of free activities, including:
- School workshops and assemblies
- Talks for local groups and councils
- Citizen science and river monitoring days
- Pop-up stalls at local events
- A touring informational display
