Did you know?
• Their scientific name is Calopteryx virgo.
• Look out for them between May and August. You can spot them from their blue/green metallic bodies and opaque wings.
• The males have blue bodies and dark wings, while the females have green bodies and brown wings, and they grow to about 45mm.
• You will most likely spot them along fast flowing sections of rivers and streams. They especially like areas with overhanging vegetation as it provides some cover from predators.
• Their main threats are habitat loss, changes in land and watercourse management, building developments and pollution.
