Freshwater Invertebrates
- Believe it or not there are millions of creatures in this short stretch of river…. Small invertebrates can be found near the riverbed, riverbanks and amongst the vegetation.
- Invertebrates are near the beginning of the food chain in a river, as “Primary Consumers”. Many eat small plants and they themselves can be eaten by bigger invertebrates, which can then be eaten by fish, which can then be eaten by Otters, Kingfishers and Grey herons.
- Some invertebrates spend their early life in the water as “Nymphs” and then emerge as “flies” such as Mayflys or Caddisflies.
- Watch our video on “What is an invertebrate?”
- Watch our “Beneath the Surface” videos here to find out more about how invertebrates adapt to their environment.
